Nutrition Counseling

How much demand would there be for a nutritionist/weight loss counsellor?
I’m very interested in nutrition and counselling so I’d love to set up a business helping people to lose weight – do you think there is potential for a fairly good income?
Actually it is quite a good idea, though I would suspect you would need to collect a lot of different types of qualifications on the way. There is no doubt that one to one counselling can be useful in the sort of behaviour modification often needed to bring about the lifestyle changes requires for weight loss and improved fitness. A dietetics qualification and a counselling diploma would be a minimum requirement. Asking you to qualify as a fitness trainer as well is perhaps asking too much, this could be done by another staff member.

Wellness Counseling $20.99 Developed by a professor who has been teaching a popular and innovative wellness counseling course for over a decade, this new text is organized into a format specifically designed to meet the needs of both counselor education graduate students and their teachers — making both teaching and learning the material easier and more intuitive.Giving a general but comprehensive overview of the subject of wellness, Wellness Counseling offers students a compelling balance of the science and research in the field, the theories that have emerged from this research, and the practical applications that we can take away from practicing these theories. Holistic, scientific, and ultimately concerned with the humanity of counseling, this text strives to be inclusive — especially of the psychological and social aspects of wellness that have gained more attention in recent years. The book is organized in three main sections. While Section One is concerned with the background of wellness as a healthcare paradigm in the United States and major theories of wellness, and historical context for wellness, Section Two contains specific information on the social, physical, emotional, and cognitive domains of wellness. Elements of Culture in Counseling $35.99 Elements of Culture in Counseling: Foundations & Practice represents an innovative departure from the majority of multicultural counseling texts. Unlike other more traditional texts, this book considers a wider perspective of important multicultural counseling concepts rather than presenting information on counseling to specific cultural groups. Within this fresh and more inclusive context, Elements of Culture in Counseling takes both students and instructors beyond the surface of race and ethnicity and on to an in-depth exploration of the central and broad concepts vital to counseling across all cultures.Taking the theory and practice of multicultural counseling to a higher level, this conceptual approach focuses on broad cultural themes and issues as opposed to the specifics of distinct racial and cultural groups that other traditional group-based texts cling to. Elements of Culture in Counseling offers students a progressive foundation of insights into multicultural counseling as well as practical direction that develops the awareness, knowledge, and skills needed for culturally competent counseling. The book is organized into three sections: Foundations, Practice, and Synthesis. The first section of the book provides students with historical context to the discipline of multicultural counseling as well as an exploration of important core concepts necessary for effective multicultural counseling. The second part of the book examines critical practice issues for culturally competent counseling. The book closes with a chapter that synthesizes the key concepts explored throughout the book. |

Brief Pastoral Counseling $17 “Most pastoral counselors, clergy, and psychotherapists assume that truly effective counseling requires months or even years. Research suggests otherwise. Studies have provided two startling findings. First, most persons come for four or fewer counseling sessions, whatever the counseling method employed. Second, the majority of any counseling’s effectiveness occurs in the opening few sessions. Part One uses brief pastoral counseling as a framework for detailing specific issues and approaches: getting the problem clear, assigning homework between sessions, and focusing on strengths. Part Two connects many of the typical problems encountered in parish ministry to specific counseling interventions which work in only a few sessions. Using many examples formulated out of Stone’s years of counseling experience, it allows the reader to visualize each approach and make use of it as a counseling strategy.” |
Language of Counseling $11.99 “Since the world has its jargon, it is time that Christian counselors use biblical language when counseling. Too many unwittingly fail to do so. In this book, you will learn how to use language that represents rather than misrepresents the truth of God. Using the world’s language no only confuses and misleads counselees, it dishonors God by distorting His truth.” |

Strategic Biblical Counseling $15.99 “If you have been waiting for someone to write a practical and effective book on Biblical counseling, this book is for you Christians today are seeking professional psychological services in increasing numbers. The local church has always been a community resource for people in emotional need, but Christian psychology has marginalized pastoral and Biblical counseling. It is time to return the ministry of pastoral counseling to the church. What Christian counselors need is a model of biblical counseling that is simple, doctrinally sound, and strategic. Dr. Burts says: I journeyed away from God because of confusion about my identity in Christ. Upon discovering these truths, I became impassioned to advance personal spiritual growth in the church through the ministry of Biblical counseling. I have used the principles of Strategic Biblical Counseling for many years with great success. People are changed as they understand who they are and what they have “in Christ.”" |

Counseling and Community: Using Church Relationships to Reinforce Counseling $24.95 “Traditionally, counseling has focused primarily on the individual–overlooking the interaction between the community and the individual. Wilson has created a biblically-based counseling model that anchors the individual within the community. The result is a perspective that encompasses all aspects of a person’s life, where the community becomes a helper in the counseling process. The thesis of this book is tied to the assumption that we need a counseling approach that is community-oriented rather than exclusively focused on the individual. When this is the case, we will be able to appreciate the biblical emphasis on the people of God. While he prizes a relationship with individuals, God’s heart is with a body, a fellowship, a community. Both pastors and private counselors need to reaffirm the priority of community and its power in the healing process. Rod Wilson (PhD, York University) is President and Professor of Counselling and Psychology at Regent College in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. He is also the author of Exploring Your Anger and Helping Angry People.” |

Theology Of Christian Counseling $18.99 “A Theology of Christian Counseling is a book that connects biblical doctrine with practical living. Salvation, that central concern of Protestant theology, is often too narrowly defined. It is thought to be “being saved from the consequences of sin.” But God is doing much more. He is making something new out of the old sinful nature. He is, in Christ, making new creatures. “No counseling system that is based on some other foundation can begin to offer what Christian counseling offers . . . No matter what the problem is, no matter how greatly sin has abounded, the Christian counselor’s stance is struck by the far-more-abounding nature of the grace of Jesus Christ in redemption. What a difference this makes in counseling!” In this book the reader will gain an insight into the rich theological framework that supports and directs a biblical approach to counseling. And the connection between solid theology and practical application will become compelling. This is a one-of-a-kind. Don’t ignore it!” |
Strategies for Brief Pastoral Counseling $18 “More and more professionals in ministry realized the benefits of brief pastoral counseling-typically three sessions-for addressing the real-life dilemmas of their congregants. In this very helpful resource, eleven leaders in pastoral counseling-both established leaders and new thinkers in the field-offer a convincing rationale. Based on reserach, case studies, and the latest thinking, they lay out (1) the dynamics of the pastor- parishioner relationship, including the need for collaborative, hospitable, future-oriented, and wholistic counseling, and (2) specific strategies, including brief counseling’s solution-focused method, its relation to spiritual direction, its focus on people’s strengths, and time limits. The volume concludes with a call for the whole field to recognize the contextual, practical character of effective, responsible pastoral counseling.” |

The Practical Encyclopedia of Christian Counseling $20 “For some time the Biblical counseling world has needed a reference volume containing articles that refer to the various aspects of Christian counseling. Here Jay Adams, the father of Nouthetic counseling, sets forth in concise form what you need to know. The book is not academically oriented; rather it is a practical work in which insights, directions, and methodology may be found side-by-side with exegetically sound teaching. While many encyclopedias are voluminous, this book aims at being comprehensive while remaining usable by the practicing pastor or counselor. It is a valuable tool for informal as well as formal instruction in biblical counseling. From the Preface: The Practical Encyclopedia of Christian Counseling is designed to afford Christian counselors quick reference as well as comprehensive access to the chief principles and practices of biblical counseling. It is called an “encyclopedia” because a counselor interested in surveying the gamut of those principles and practices will find in this volume a wider variety of subjects than may be located in any other book of biblical counseling. The counseling described here is truly “Christian.” with method and content firmly rooted in careful biblical exegesis. At the same time it is “practical” because articles consist not merely of definitions and descriptions, but also of application of the material useful to Christian counselors. Although not necessarily the only way these biblical principles can be applied, they are the fruit of years of study and experience in biblical counseling. In short, the book is designed as an aid to the working counselor who needs a quick reference guide. We trust that God will use it to His gloryand to the blessing of His people.” |

Effective Biblical Counseling $18.99 “EFFECTIVE BIBLICAL COUNSELING.”Many of the people we deal with in counseling are hiding behind all sorts of defensive overlays designed to protect a fragile sense of self-acceptance or to prevent further rejection or failure from reaching an already crippled self-identity. Counseling involves a stripping away of the layers, sometimes gently sometimes forcefully, to reach the real person underneath.’”My thesis is that problems develop when the basic needs for significance and security are threatened. People pursue irresponsible ways of living as a means of defending against feelings of insignificance and insecurity. In most cases these folks have arrived at a wrong idea as to what constitutes significance and security.”Counseling is relationship. Relationship interactions vary depending on the temperaments, problems, personalities of the people involved. With some you adopt a professional air, with others a relaxed, friendly mood. With some you directly teach, with others you ramblingly explore. With some you assign specific behavioral homework assignments, with others you subtly encourage broad affective or attitudinal changes.”s.”" |

Principles of Multicultural Counseling and Therapy $26.49 In an era of globalization characterized by widespread migration and cultural contacts, psychologists, counselors, and other mental health professionals face a unique challenge: how does one practice successfully when working with clients from so many different backgrounds? Gielen, Draguns, and Fish argue that an understanding of the general principles of multicultural counseling is of great importance to all practitioners. The lack of this knowledge can have several negative consequences during therapy, including differences in expectations between counselor and client, misdiagnosis of the client’s concerns, missed non-verbal cues, and the client feeling that she has been misunderstood. This volume focuses on the general nature of cultural influences in counseling rather than on counseling specific ethnic groups. Counseling practices from all over the world, not just those of Western society, are explored. Bringing together the work of a diverse group of international experts, the editors have compiled a volume that is not only concise and teachable, but also an essential guidebook for all mental-health professionals. |

Ayurveda In Urban Living $9.95 Ayurveda in Urban Living (AUL) is a weight-reduction program that goes beyond diet and exercise by incorporating the ancient principles of “Ayurveda” (life knowledge) made popular by Deepak Chopra and Dr. Vasant Lad. Ayurveda in Urban Living incorporates all four quadrants of healing: the physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental realms. With years of experience in medicine, physical fitness and nutrition counseling, Joan Stroud M.D. and Anita Thompkins, M.S., offer AUL as a guide to encourage and assist those desperately seeking weight reduction and lifestyle changes using these principles. ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Anita Thompkins and Joan Stroud met during an Ayurvedic course taught by Dr. Naina Maraballi in New York City. It was a quick “meeting of the spirits” and they immediately commenced discussing goals, hopes and dreams. Anita has had many years of experience as a personal fitness consultant and yoga instructor/practitioner. Joan is a traditionally-trained family physician. Following many discussions, they both felt that their interest in implementing Ayurvedic principles was an unusual goal but, they agreed, a necessity for fitness and good health. A common theme of their discussions concerned disillusionment with the health care delivery system and clients’ and patients’ lack of access to complementary modalities. It was Anita who first proposed that they co-author this book since each longed to educate and enrich people’s lives through the use of good nutrition. Both are excellent examples of Kapha in balance and Kapha imbalance. Anita maintains excellent weight control, even with Kaphic tendencies. Joan, though out-of-balance, is incorporating these Ayurvedicprinciples and is hard at work toward equilibrium. Years of working with people who struggle with weight loss and who, somtimes in desperation resort to aggressive and invasive weight-loss procedures, was alarming to both Anita and Joan. The fundamental question they posed was, “How, as |

Chakra Foods for Optimum Health: A Guide to the Foods That Can Improve Your Energy, Inspire Creative Changes, Open Your Heart, and Heal Body, Mind, and Spirit $18.95 Nutritionist and yoga practitioner Deanna Minich’s Chakra Foods provides information on how to heal emotional and physical woes through making the right food choices. The material for this book developed out of the author’s highly successful “Nutrition for the Soul” classes, workshops, and private counseling sessions. Not a diet book, it looks at both the nutritional and spiritual aspects of the foods we eat and how they can heal us. For each chakra, specific affirmations and other practices are also offered, as are meal plans and recipes. Helpful lists, charts, and diagrams help readers easily pinpoint and diagnose themselves and the various prescriptive options are all very clearly explained. With lots of useful sidebars, this book really is a treasure trove of energy medicine in the form of food-truly food for the body, mind, and soul! |
