Tips for Seniors About Good Nutrition

It’s really important to keep an eye on your nutritional intake.  As we grow older it’s very tempting to just eat what tastes good no matter what the effect on our system.  If too much weight is a problem, start by downsizing your meals, use a salad plate and only fill it once.  No seconds.  Choose fruit for a snack between meals.  Eat what tastes good to you; just not so much of it, your healthy body has a way of craving foods that contain vitamins that it needs.

Include fruits and vegetables, complex carbohydrates for energy; all of which provide fiber for proper digestion.  Dairy based products like milk, cheese and yogurt contain valuable calcium. Protein is needed for building muscles, yes; even seniors can build up their muscles.

A regular exercise regimen will increase your metabolism and newly revived muscles continue to burn Calories after being stimulated.  You will be controlling your weight just by moving around more and you will also feel like being more physical; joining in with others in activities like walking, hiking, swimming; games like badminton, tennis, and bocce ball.

A Balanced Diet with healthy snacks between meals will keep you in good health as well as brightening your spirits.  You will also find that by eating properly, some pesky problems like high blood pressure, joint aches, even borderline diabetes might become less of a focus in your daily life.

It is so easy to become confused by all of the reports that are available telling you to eat lots of this, or do not eat too much of that, but the bottom line is that a habit of using moderation through out each day will help you stay healthy and enjoy your life.

Nothing is as comforting as falling into a wonderfully soft cozy bed at the end of a long harrowing day.  Sometimes we take our bed for granted but perhaps it would be nice to refresh it with new memory foam bedding.  Adding memory foam pillows will cradle your head and reduce discomfort in your neck.  As you snuggle down into your comforting bed consider using hypnosis for sleep as a way to relax further and bring yourself to a deep slumber that will allow you to awake refreshed and ready to go in the morning.

For decades we have been taught that fat is bad for us, carbohydrates better, and that the key to a healthy weight is eating less and exercising more. Yet with more and more people acting on this advice, we have seen unprecedented epidemics of obesity and diabetes. Taubes argues persuasively that the problem lies in refined carbohydrates (white flour, sugar, easily digested starches) and sugars-via their dramatic and longterm effects on insulin, the hormone that regulates fat accumulation-and that the key to good health is the kind of calories we take in, not the number. There are good calories, and bad ones. Good Calories These are from foods without easily digestible carbohydrates and sugars. These foods can be eaten without restraint. Meat, fish, fowl, cheese, eggs, butter, and non-starchy vegetables. Bad Calories These are from foods that stimulate excessive insulin secretion and so make us fat and increase our risk of chronic disease all refined and easily digestible carbohydrates and sugars. The key is not how much vitamins and minerals they contain, but how quickly they are digested. (So apple juice or even green vegetable juices are not necessarily any healthier than soda.) Taubes traces how the common assumption that carbohydrates are fattening was abandoned in the 1960s when fat and cholesterol were blamed for heart disease and then -wrongly-were seen as the causes of a host of other maladies, including cancer. He shows us how these unproven hypotheses were emphatically embraced by authorities in nutrition, public health, and clinical medicine, in spite of how well-conceived clinical trials have consistently refuted them. He also documents the dietary trials of carbohydrate-restriction, which consistently show that the fewer carbohydrates we consume, the leaner we will be.
