New Optimum Nutrition for the Mind $9.99 How we think and feel is directly affected by what we take into our bodies. Eating the right food has been proven to boost IQ, improve mood and emotional stability, sharpen the memory, and keep the mind young. Similarly, the harmful things we take into our bodies, or anti-nutrients—including oxidants, alcohol, sugar, and stimulants—negatively impact mental health. These are the main issues world-renowned author Patrick Holford discusses in his New Optimum Nutrition for the Mind. The book is broken into eight parts. Part 1 provides “food for thought”—what are the best foods to eat and which nutrients are most beneficial? Part 2 discusses how to protect the brain from becoming polluted and how to identify and avoid “brain allergies.” Part 3 teaches readers how to boost their intelligence, enhance their memory, beat the blues, solve sleep problems, and more. Part 4 turns to mental illness, Part 5 to depression and schizophrenia, and Parts 6 and 7 to mental health in the young and old, respectively. These parts include information on identifying and understanding specific problems and how to treat them naturally and effectively. Part 8 provides a complete action plan for regaining and maintaining good mental health. The book closes with a helpful resources section that provides readers with useful addresses and a comprehensive product and supplement directory. From boosting one’s memory, solving depression, and beating addictions to overcoming eating disorders, preventing age-related memory decline, and balancing out mood swings, New Optimum Nutrition for the Mind covers a wide range of important topics and should be of interest to anyone who wants to think and feel great. |

What is Good? $11.81 One of the most fundamental questions in our life is to find out what we value – what principles we want to live by and which codes we will use to guide our behaviour. Most of us want to live a good life. But what, in today’s secular society, does ‘good’ actually mean? To classical Greeks, the acquisition of knowledge, the enjoyment of the senses, creativity and beauty were all aspects of life to strive for. Then came the volcanic declarations of St Paul and his fundamentalist ideas on sin and human nature. In WHAT IS GOOD?, A.C. Grayling examines these and other proposals on how to live a good life, from the ‘heroic’ ideals of the Greek poets to Kant’s theories on freedom and the UN Declaration on Human Rights. |

Feeding and Nutrition of Infants and Young Children $73.8 Sets out the scientific rationale for the development of national nutrition and feeding recommendations for infants and young children in Europe. Although major emphasis is placed on recommended intakes for specific nutrients, the book also offers advice on a range of additional factors that contribute to good feeding practices and need to be addressed in national policies. Particular attention is given to conditions in countries of the former Soviet Union, where recommendations on infant nutrition and feeding practices are outdated and urgently require revision. Intended for use by policy-makers and nutrition experts in European countries, the book responds to a number of traditional dietary practices that have adverse effects on nutritional status, particularly in relation to iron deficiency anaemia. Recommendations and advice also take into account mounting evidence that optimum infant and young child feeding can reduce the risk of some of the most prevalent adult diseases, including cardiovascular disease, in European populations. The book has twelve chapters. The first outlines nutrition-related health problems in young children and reviews what is known about feeding practices, duration of exclusive breast-feeding, and introduction of complementary foods in countries of the former Soviet Union. Subsequent chapters set out recommended nutrient intakes for energy and macronutrients, vitamins, and minerals. To provide a standard for assessing the adequacy of diets, recommended nutrient intakes issued by the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, and WHO are presented and compared. For each nutrient, recommended intakes are further explained through the inclusion of information on the nutrient’s physiological function, food sources, requirements, and the health consequences of both insufficient and excessive intakes. A separate chapter is devoted to recommendations for the control of iron deficiency, which remains an important health problem throughout Europe. Breast-feeding and alternatives are covered in the most extensive chapter, which reviews the latest data on the many nutritional and non-nutritional benefits of breast-feeding, and discusses the importance of maternal nutrition, practical aspects of breast-feeding, and situations where alternatives may be preferable or necessary. Chapter eight, on complementary feeding, answers a number of questions about the physiological need for complementary foods and the timing of their introduction, and lists some of the best foods to prepare for infants. Subsequent chapters underscore the importance of caring practices as fundamental determinants of good nutrition and feeding, and offer advice on the interpretation of measures of attained growth as a tool for assessing nutritional status. A brief chapter on dental health explains the need to limit the intake of sugar, provide daily tooth care, and ensure appropriate fluoride intake. The book concludes with a chapter on food sa |

Nutrition Almanac $19.95 The 5th edition of the Nutrition Almanac brings current a nutrition reference tool first published in 1973, when nutrition resources on this topic were nearly non-existent. Nutrition Almanac quickly became the go-to source for authoritative data on macro- and micronutrients. This most recent edition takes the Almanac in a different direction, perhaps reflecting stronger competition in the nutrition sourcebook arena. Readers will find the data section, ”Diet and Food Composition,” still provides the standard information–calories, protein, carbohydrate, and fiber, plus the micronutrient breakdowns per item. Entries are grouped by type of food group (e.g., dairy and eggs, fats and oils, fruits and juices, grains). Other major sections cover nutrients and what each contributes to a healthy body; health conditions and the recommended nutritional responses for addressing each; and an overview of food groups. New to this edition is a separate section focusing on alternative medicine and therapies (for example, aromatherapy, energy balancing, meditation, and hypotherapy). In addition, alternative-therapy options are interwoven throughout the entries for health conditions… |

Nutrition in Sport $209.95 As sports have become more competitive over recent years researchers and trainers have been searching for new and innovative ways of improving performance. Ironically, an area as mundane as what an athlete eats can have profound effects on fitness, health and ultimately, performance in competition. Sports have also gained widespread acceptance in the therapeutic management of athletes with disorders associated with nutritional status. In addition, exercise has been one of the tools used for studying the control of metabolism, creating a wealth of scientific information that needs to be placed in the context of sports medicine and science. Nutrition in Sport provides an exhaustive review of the biochemistry and physiology of eating. The text is divided into three sections and commences with a discussion of the essential elements of diet, including sections on carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and trace elements, and drugs associated with nutrition. It also discusses athletes requiring special consideration, including vegetarians and diabetics. The second section considers the practical aspects of sports nutrition and discusses weight control (essential for sports with weight categories and athletes with eating disorders), the travelling athlete (where travel either disrupts established feeding patterns or introduces new hazards), environmental aspects of nutrition (including altitude and heat), and the role of sports nutritional products. |

Electrical Nutrition $12.99 Completely revised and updated, this groundbreaking self-published book has sold more than 15,000 copies through limited exposure and distribution. Electrical Nutrition outlines the authors’ revolutionary theories on health and nutrition based on an electrical model. Everything we think, feel, eat, and do triggers electrical responses in our bodies. Each of our cells is electrically charged, and therefore the electrical availability of what we eat has a profound effect on our health, vitality, and well-being. Instead of focusing on the chemical reactions that occur in every system of the human body, the authors contend that there is a simultaneous electrical reaction that has an equally, if not even more, important impact on our ability to digest and benefit from the food we consume. Any interruption to the flow of the body’s natural electrical circuitry will have a negative effect on a cellular level which, in turn, will promote disease. Electrical Nutrition offers a practical program that includes menu plans and a listing of the best “electrically available” foods-a plan that will dramatically increase stamina, vitality, and even libido. By eliminating foods that are “electrically dead,” we can rid the body of toxins that promote obesity and a host of illnesses, from chronic fatigue to heart disease, while boosting the body’s natural energy and immune function. |

Nutrition in Institutions $89.99 The importance of good nutrition for individual health and well-being is widely recognized, yet for a significant number of people who rely on institutions for food and nutrition, this importance has not always been a primary consideration. People, therefore, may find themselves consuming food they would not ordinarily choose to eat, with, in some cases, restricted choices precluding individual preferences and compromising health. In recent years, there have been major advances in the quality of catering in some areas, particularly schools. Other institutions which have not been thrust into the media spotlight have fared less well in terms of policy drive and commitment. This insightful new book looks in detail at five institutions: schools, hospitals, care homes for the elderly, prisons and the armed forces. As well as providing a fascinating history of the provision of food in each institution, each section considers: current policy and standards and their implementation adequacy of food provided with regard to the health status and dietary requirements of the people in the care of each institution efficiency of catering organization and issues relating to contract tendering, expenditure and procurement A broad spectrum of further relevant issues is also covered, including the meaning of food to those in institutions and determinants of choice. |

What Good is God? $23.99 “>>Christian Inspirational>> >>Journalist and spiritual seeker Philip Yancey has always struggled with the most basic questions of the Christian faith. The question he tackles in >What Good is God?> concerns the practical value of belief in God. At each of the 10 places he visited, his preparation for the visit and exactly what he said to the people he met each provided evidence that faith really does work when what we believe is severely tested. >What Good is God?> tells the story of Philips journey–the background, the preparation, the presentations themselves. What Makes a Good Nurse $34.95 In recent years, the human values at the heart of the nursing profession have been sidelined by an increased focus on evidence-based, target driven outcomes. They are in danger of becoming marginalised further precisely because that which nursing does best – providing care and helping individuals through the human trauma of illness – is difficult to measure, and therefore plays little, if any, part in official accounts of outcome measures for healthcare. Derek Sellman re-establishes the primacy of the virtues that underpin the practice of nursing to answer the question: what makes a good nurse? He provides those in the caring professions with both a rationale and a practical understanding of the importance that particular character traits, including justice, courage, honesty, trustworthiness and open-mindedness, play in the practice of nursing, and explains why and how nurses should strive to cultivate these virtues, and the implications of this for practice. This original and thought-provoking book will be essential reading for nurses and pre-registration student nurses, care workers, care commissioners, and many others who work in the caring professions. |

What Is Free to a Good Home? $8.78 Metric frontwoman Emily Haines received a fair amount of critical acclaim after the release of her 2006 solo debut, Knives Don’t Have Your Back, in which she eschewed the rockier guitars and occasional electronic elements for softer piano and keyboard songs backed by soft drums and sporadic string arrangements. The EP, What Is Free to a Good Home?, follows this trend, as it was recorded at the same time as her full-length, containing five songs that didn’t make the final cut, as well as a dub-inspired remix of “Mostly Waving.” There’s really no reason why these tracks didn’t end up on the full-length, as they showcase the same lyrical and harmonic strengths that Haines previously displayed, her Jenny Lewis-ish quaver a perfect accompaniment to her exhaled thoughts. Both “The Bank,” a very Elliott Smith-like piece, double-tracked vocals and all (“Whatever it is, spit it into a bottle and sell it to me/I’m looking to buy freedom for my sobriety” she sings) and “Rowboat” mix shimmering horns with Haines’ confessional words, and even “Sprig,” in which she sets the words of her father, Paul Haines, to music, while more experimental in nature, flows nicely: it’s experimental without being obsolete. What Is Free to a Good Home? (also the title of one of the elder’s poems) is strong enough to convince listeners of the singer’s abilities even if they’re not familiar with any of her other work, and for those who are, it just adds to her increasingly noteworthy repertoire. ~ Marisa Brown, Rovi Performers: Jimmy Shaw – Harmonium, Trumpet; Chris Seligman – French Horn; Rafael Hoekman – Cello; Emily Haines – Vocals, Piano; Evan Cranley – Trombone; Justin Peroff – Drums; Lance Barrington – Vocals |

What If? $11.14 Emerson Drive is contemporary country at its poppiest, a band that is country in name only, with a sound and sensibility much closer to the mellow Californian country-rock of the ’70s or the slick MOR of the ’80s than to Music City. After all, this is a band that, for its second album, 2004′s What If?, has placed all its chits on producer Richard Marx, who is best known for his post-Eagles adult contemporary hits of the late ’80s and is a pop craftsman, not a honky tonker. To country purists, this naturally means that Emerson Drive is not something to be taken seriously, and if you’re looking for straight-ahead country, these guys don’t deliver. But that doesn’t mean they’re bad. In fact, they’re very, very good, a mainstream pop band with appealing tunefulness and a mild country flair. Marx is a perfect fit as producer, and brings out their strengths, whether it’s their endearing everyguy persona or good harmonies, selecting a tight set of 14 songs (including four co-written by Marx) in the process. It’s a modest album, yet it’s also sturdy and well constructed, growing in stature after several plays. Above all, with What If? Emerson Drive proves to be reliable, delivering a record that may not progress far from the band’s debut — it follows the same blueprint, only delving a little deeper into pop — but is certainly its equal in terms of quality, and is a solid second effort. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: David Pichette – Fiddle; Brad Mates – Guitar (Acoustic), Vocals; Danick Dupelle – Vocals (Background), Guitar; Darlene Wallace – Keyboards; Emerson Drive – Vocals; Mike Melancon – Drums, Percussion; Patrick Bourque – Guitar (Bass); Paul Franklin – Guitar (Steel) |

What’s the Good of Counselling & Psychotherapy? $57 For those seeking an honest appraisal of the activity and profession of counselling, the author of this rigorous examination of the talking therapies asks such key questions as: How has counselling evolved and why is it flourishing now in Western society? What are the limits on its applications? What social functions does it serve? Who benefits from it and who does not? What is its intellectual standing?. Colin Feltham brings contemporary counselling into focus by comparisons with other modern and historical helping services, religious and philosophical analyses of the human condition, and the present socio-economic context. He also discusses the topical issue of professionalization, and examines the arguments concerning the alleged differences between counselling and psychotherapy. He demonstrates that it is extremely difficult to define counselling in a way which fairly, unambiguously and accurately places it beyond misunderstanding and which reasonably distinguishes it from other similar activities. |

Scaling Up Nutrition $9.99 Action against malnutrition is needed more than ever. An additional US$10.3 billion a year is required from public resources to mount a successful attack against undernutrition on a worldwide scale. This would benefit over 360 million children in the 36 countries with the highest burden of undernutrition—home to 90 percent of the stunted children worldwide—and prevent 1.1 million child deaths. Since early childhood offers a special window of opportunity to improve nutrition, the bulk of the investment needs to be targeted between pre-pregnancy until two years of age.Scaling Up Nutrition: What Will It Cost? offers suggestions on how to raise these resources. This worthy investment will yield high returns in the form of thriving children, healthier families, and more productive workers. And it is essential to make progress on the nutrition and child mortality Millennium Development Goals and to protect critical human capital in developing economies. The human and financial costs of further neglect will be very high. This call for greater investment in nutrition is also opportune, at a time when global efforts to strengthen health systems provide a unique opportunity to scale up integrated packages of health and nutrition interventions, with common delivery platforms, and lower costs.Scaling Up Nutrition: What Will It Cost? has benefited from the expertise of many international agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and research institutions. The cooperation of so many practitioners is evidence of a growing recognition of the need to invest in nutrition interventions, and a growing consensus about how to deliver effective programs. This book will be of interest to policy makers, nutritionists, government officials, and all those interested in improving child nutrition and child health. |

Fear . . . What Is It Good For? $15.99 “There are numerous self-help books on bookstore shelves trying to bring peace to Christians by luring them through the “Land of Oz.” In actuality, though, such books cause believers to stumble in their faith through a “mind over matter” approach strongly endorsed in our world today-a world without Jesus Through personal trials and triumphs, I found in Jesus a better way to have peace within, even when flying high on a cloud or crashing to the ground. Through this book, you, too, will find the way to peace as you let Jesus remove your heartaches, and the bondage causing your woes, something mind over matter cannot do The core principles used to bring this book to light-God’s Word and personal experiences guided by Romans 15: 18 (NKJV): “For I will not dare to speak of any of those things, which Christ has not accomplished through me.” Although born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Ronald was reared and educated in Dallas, Texas, and has spent most of his adult life living in Alabama where he now resides with his lovely wife, Mary Ann, in Madison, Alabama. Having no direction for his life, Ronald exhausted his younger days on things of this world, creating for himself a life of self-indulgence and self-love. In the middle of this existence, however, Jesus came looking for Ronald and when He found him, He restored his life with blessings he never before knew-true love-abundant joy-sublime peace. The most succinct way to describe his life-he was born in the 1940′s, reared in the 50′s, experienced the 60′s, overdosed in the 70′s, found Jesus in the 80′s and has evermore been blessed, joyfully loving and serving Jesus with his life.” |

The Management of Nutrition in Major Emergencies $64.8 A practical guide to measures needed to ensure that the food and nutrition needs of disaster-stricken populations, refugees, or internally displaced persons are adequately met. Noting that nutrition is always a key concern in emergency management, the book offers expert advice based on both the latest knowledge in the nutritional sciences and advances in concepts of emergency management that stress preparedness and long-term recovery. The engagement of local health services and authorities is emphasized as the best strategy for building national capacity and ensuring rapid recovery. The book covers the concepts, principles, and precise measures needed to ensure adequate nutrition in both the relief phase and the subsequent rehabilitation and development phases. Details range from a list of the equipment needed for a weight-for-height survey, through a diagram illustrating arrangements for ration distribution in camp situations, to instructions for preparing feeding mixtures for the treatment of specific deficiency diseases. Throughout, particular attention is given to conditions in developing countries, where inadequate nutrition and infectious diseases can make populations especially vulnerable to malnutrition in emergencies. The book has seven chapters. The first, on meeting nutritional requirements, explains the importance of nutritional assessment as a fundamental management tool for calculating food needs, monitoring the adequacy of food access and intake, and ensuring adequate food procurements. The chapter also sets out recommendations for mean daily per capita intakes of energy and protein and for micronutrients and other specific nutrients. The major nutritional deficiency diseases are covered in chapter two, which includes detailed information on the signs, symptoms, prevention, and treatment of protein-energy malnutrition, iron-deficiency anaemia, vitamin A deficiency, iodine deficiency disorders, beriberi, pellagra, and scurvy. Chapter three describes the methodology for measuring malnutrition. Information includes target audiences for assessment, advice on body measurements and clinical indicators of malnutrition, and precise instructions for conducting rapid nutritional surveys, individual screening, and nutritional surveillance. Chapter four provides a detailed guide to the planning, organization, and delivery of general feeding programmes aimed at the affected population as a whole. Topics covered include basic requirements for suitable food commodities, principles of good organization and coordination, and the composition of a general ration calculated to meet the populations’ minimum requirements for energy, protein, fat, and micronutrients. Guidelines for selective feeding programmes are presented in chapter five, which covers both the supplementary feeding of vulnerable groups and the therapeutic feeding of individuals suffering from deficiency diseases. In view of the close link between infectious diseases and malnutrit |

What Can We Learn from Nutrition Impact Evaluations? $14.99 High levels of child malnutrition in developing countries contribute to mortality and have long-term consequences for children’s cognitive development and earnings as adults. Recent impact evaluations show that many different interventions have had an impact on children’s anthropometric outcomes (height, weight, and birth weight), but there is no simple answer to the question “What works?” to address the problem. Similar interventions have widely different results in different settings, owing to differences in local context, the causes and severity of malnutrition, and the capacity for program implementation.Impact evaluations of programs supported by the Bank, which are generally large-scale, complex inter-ventions in low-capacity settings, show equally variable results. The findings confirm that it should not be assumed that an intervention found effective in a randomized medical setting will have the same effects when implemented under field conditions. There are many robust experimental and quasi-experimental methods for assessing impact under difficult circumstances often found in field settings. The relevance and impact of nutrition impact evaluations could be enhanced by collecting data on service delivery, demand-side behavioral outcomes, and implementation processes to better understand the causal chain and what part of the chain is weak, in parallel with impact evaluations. It is also important to understand better the distribution of impacts, particularly among the poor, and to document better the costs and effectiveness of interventions.High levels of child malnutrition in developing countries are contributing to mortality and present long-term consequences for the survivors. An estimated 178 million children under age 5 in developing countries are stunted (low height for age) and 55 million are wasted (low weight for height). Malnutrition makes children more susceptible to illness and strongly affects child mortality. Beyond the mortality risk in the short run, the developmental delays caused by undernutrition affect children’s cognitive outcomes and productive potential as adults. Micronutrient deficiencies—vitamin A, iron, zinc, iodine, for example—are also common and have significant consequences. Progress in reducing malnutrition has been slow: More than half of countries are not on track to achieve the Millennium Development Goal of halving the share of children who are malnou-rished (low weight for age) by 2015. The food price and financial crises are making achievement of this goal even more elusive. |

Adequate Food for All Culture Science and Technology of Food in T $99.95 “The most notable contribution of this book is the single-volume breadth of the coverage of issues facing our food system. The result is a volume that will benefit farmers, nutritionists, environmentalists, policy makers, and all of us who eat. My hope is that all of these groups will read and discuss this book, for it will stimulate the type of broad-ranging solutions that we will need if we are to provide food security for all.” Alice N. Pell, Vice Provost for international relations at Cornell University, from the ForewordFood is the sustenance of life. But while we understand that a secure supply of food has been affected by many factors over the course of history, we do not often allow ourselves to entertain the idea that a lack of adequate food worldwide is a very real and dangerous possibility. While soil degradation, water distribution, climate change, population growth, and environmental issues are of serious concern, the ultimate expectation is that humankind will survive and even prevail simply because it always has, through human ingenuity and continued advances in science and technology.Adequate Food for All: Culture, Science, and Technology of Food in the 21st Century looks at those factors threatening to compromise food production and distribution. It examines the myriad influences on food security today as well as the human responses to them. Taking an interdisciplinary approach that involves authors of diverse expertise, this volume —Discusses our evolving understanding of what is critical to good nutrition and health Examines the role of religion and faith in food choices, as well as the influence of culture and customsExplores issues of obesity and related diseases as well as diseases of nutrient deficienciesDescribes the most dangerous threats to sustainable food production Lays out viable solutions through |

Elephant Zee And The Magic Pyramid $14.37 The story of Zee and the Magic pyramid brings the new and improved Children Food Guide Pyramid to life. It takes Zee, a plump little elephant on a healthy adventure where, along the way, he finds true friendship. Zee does not know how much he should eat to stay healthy. He feels lonely because no one wants to play with him and so he leaves his herd. On his journey, he meets Mitty, a little mouse that helps him find a Magic Pyramid where he can learn how to eat right. “I can give you very good advice, and if you follow it, you will become a very healthy and happy elephant.” said Mitty. “What is your advice Mitty?” asked the little elephant. “I know about the magic pyramid. We have to walk north four days and three nights to get to this magic pyramid. Once we reach it, I will give you a lesson that will change your life!” said Mitty. In the end, Zee becomes whole and hearty and realizes that he found a good friend that helped him become healthy. This book is written for both children and the parents, stressing the importance of good, balanced nutrition and physical activity. Childhood obesity has become an epidemic in America. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over the past three decades the childhood obesity rate has more than doubled for preschool children aged 2-5 years and adolescents aged 12-19 years and it has more than tripled for children aged 6-11 years. (“Prevalence of Overweight and Obesity Among Children and Adolescents: United States, 1999-2002″; Oct. 6, 2004) It is vital to educate children about proper nutrition and exercise when they are young. Healthy kids become healthy adults. This book educates little children, as well as their parentsthat it is ok to eat all kinds of foods in small portions and enjoy each and every meal. So, Zee and Mitty traveled four days and three nights. They went through jungles, fields, and rivers. Finally, on the fourth day, Mitty said that they were almost there. Before Mitty |

Health for All Children $2 The first edition of HFAC was published in 1989 and quickly made a substantial impact on the practice of preventive health care for children. It challenged many long established practices and suggested new areas for research. The importance of preventing disease and adverse outcome was emphasised. HFAC4 continues the themes of previous editions, in particular highlighting the growing evidence the behavioural problems and educational failure are not inevitable, and can be prevented. Thus the role of screening for developmental problems, while not ignored, is set in the context of what can be done to promote language development, reading, and enthusiasm for learning. This fourth edition differs significantly from its predecessors. Most importantly, it deals with the health care needs of children of school age as well as pre-school children. In addition, it outlines the needs of special groups of children, including those who are vulnerable or disabled and those living in unusual circumstances. The legislative framework is outlined and the hallmarks of good practice are described. HFAC4 will, like previous editions, be essential reading for all health professionals who work with children whether in the community or at the receiving end of referrals. It will also provide vital background knowledge for those charged with the responsibility of planning, commissioning and monitoring. Changes for the 4th edition: Takes full account of the current government initiatives on the children’s health with particular reference to promoting children’s health. Incorporates a review of the health care needs of school age children, as well as those for the under-fives. Emphasizes the importance of parent education and support, language, and the literacy skills. Reviews behavioural management programmes for parents. Describes the duties laid on PCTs with regard to education and social services support. Updated information on nutrition and |
