We are becoming a society of fat people. This is rather depressing. Many studies have shown that around 2/3 of adults in Western societies are overweight or obese. This can lead to many medical issues.

1.Reduce risk of heart disease- A Healthy Diet reduces your risk of heart disease and other complications like Type II diabetes.

4.You will have increased levels of concentration- A healthy diet is good for your concentration levels. A healthy diet means that you will get more done with your day and achieve more out of life.

8.A nutritious diet helps cells regenerate and grow- A healthy diet can help with cell regeneration and re-growth so that you will recover from injuries quicker and grow stronger. This is why a healthy diet is important if you are exercising to get fit or grow muscles.

9.A nutritious diet can improve vision- A healthy diet is good for the eyes. Eating a nutritious diet can improve your vision.

10.A healthy diet can help you live longer- Because a healthy diet contributes to all of the above, a healthy diet means that you will live longer.

While it may not be as stellar as their future releases would be, Morphine’s debut album, 1992′s Good, did a splendid job of introducing the Boston trio’s highly original sound. While it was the alternative crowd who immediately latched onto Morphine, their music was geared more toward the jazz scene — a wailing saxophone, lead bass (played with a slide), and lyrics influenced by ’50s beat poetry were all-important ingredients. The opening title track remains one of the band’s darkest, while other selections are a bit more upbeat — “Have a Lucky Day” and the inappropriately titled “The Saddest Song”; all the while, the band excels at creating different moods with each successive track. Other highlights include the mid-paced “Claire” and “The Only One,” the slight salsa feel of “You Speak My Language,” the frantic “Test-Tube Baby/Shoot’m Down,” and the more calm and sultry “You Look Like Rain.” On their next release, Cure for Pain, Morphine would improve further on the strength of their songwriting and cutting-edge sound, but Good still contains more than a few standouts. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi Performers: Jim Fitting – Bass Harmonica; Billy Conway – Drums; Dana Colley – Sax (Baritone), Saxophone, Vocals; Jerry Deupree – Drums; Mark Sandman – Tritar, Slide Bass, Organ, Vocals, Guitar, Bass

Many aspects of pianist Ben Waltzer’s modern mainstream jazz musicality are enjoyable. His is a flowing, bright lyricism — nothing forced, contrived, or clichéd — and he uses darker reflective shadings and off-minor flourishes à la Monk, Tyner, Cedar Walton, and his teacher Geri Allen. He’s well-trained (New England Conservatory, Tufts, Harvard) and far from lightweight. Here it’s an all-trio session with bassist Reid Anderson and drummer Jordi Rossy on a program of two standards, Monk and Allen numbers, and five Waltzer compositions. Of the originals, “Ian’s Move” is hard charging, illuminating a melody in orange and yellow colors while swinging neatly and cleanly. It’s similar to Monk’s revamping of “Sweet Georgia Brown” called “Bright Mississippi,” which also shows up in slightly reworked fashion two tracks later. You expect waltzes from Waltzer and they’re bundled in the middle of the CD — the title track a deeper hue than most light-hearted three-steps — and “Skylark” starts with solo piano pining that turns to a 3/4 rhythm that is as quietly urgent and heartfelt as a Randy Weston three-peat. “Home Away from Home” compares favorably to “Little Sunflower” in its melody line, a beautiful concept in a caravan-like pacing. A similar loping desert pulse informs Allen’s “Rain.” Anderson and Rossy are quite good as rhythm mates, not overpowering the pianist but giving accurate doses of push and pull. This is especially evident on the uppity “Bright Mississippi” and a quickie in the time frame and spatial sense “Sketch.” The ballad “Two People” gives Anderson ample solo space, while holiday one note bell tones rev a modal adaptation of “Secret Love.” There’s another seat on the train next to fellow young pianists Brad Mehldau, Ethan Iverson, Bill Charlap, and Bruce Barth. It’s occupied by Waltzer, whose talent and taste easily rival his peers. This is highly recommended to lovers of the piano-bass-drums trio. ~ Michael G. Nastos, Rovi Performers: Ben Waltzer – Piano; Jordi Rossy – Drums; Reid Anderson – Bass

Good To Be

Good To Be

$10.38

In the decade they’ve been on the road, Backyard Tire Fire has called many small towns home — Ashville NC, Athens GA, and currently, Bloomington IL. Staying away from the centers of the music biz has served them well. They’ve never been tied down to any particular scene, so the songwriting of head man Ed Anderson and the playing of the rhythm section — brother Matt Anderson on bass and drummer Tim Kramp — is free to range far and wide, covering the rock spectrum from roots rock to Brit-pop. The small town vibe also permeates the band’s lyrics and attitude, giving the tunes a working-class veracity that puts them in the company of populist artists like Springsteen and Bob Seger, able to shine a light on the small heroic moments of everyday life without any self-consciously arty moves. This is especially notable on the songs Anderson writes about life on the road with a touring band. Most writers who attempt to chronicle the misadventures of the rock & roll life string together tired clichés hoping that the very fact that they’re in a band will give the tunes some oomph. Not Anderson. “Road Song #39″ opens the album with a slow, bluesy grind augmented by some simple organ fills laid down by Steve Berlin. It’s a sweaty, nasty tune, with a warts-and-all look at life on the road and Berlin’s organ adding a hint of roadhouse R&B. The sound is still rooted in country and roots rock, but Berlin (Los Lobos) has pushed the band out of their comfort zone without messing with their winning combination. Berlin plays piano on “Good to Be,” another glimpse of road life without any romantic illusions, and a sinister tune that sounds like it comes from the midway tent of a dark carnival. Bleeding fingers from crappy guitar strings, not getting paid, and cars that just barely get them from gig to gig are dismissed as “a minor inconvenience,” because they’re just happy to be playing music, although Anderson’s vocal ironic vocal is less than enthusiastic. “A Thousand Gigs Ago” is a slow, melodic rocker that could have been written by Ian Hunter, a salute to the mixture of excitement and confusion that makes the touring life addictive. The album’s other love songs cover a lot of emotional (and geographical) ground. “Brady” tips hits hat to the music of Tom Petty, but Anderson’s vocal style is more sincere. The song tells of a young man looking for “love” in the brothels of Amsterdam with a catchy, singalong chorus and subtle percussion accents from Tim Kramp that lift you up despite the downbeat subject matter. “Estelle” is a story song that sounds like the Eagles backed by the Beatles, a moody tale of a single working mother full of compassion and lush vocal harmonies. Anderson’s solo is midway between George Harrison and Don Rich. The most countrified song here is “Hell and Back” although it’s disguised as a pop/rock tune. It’s a rough-and-tumble love song with a neat lyrical twist and a great, clanging country guitar line. ~ j. poet, Rovi Performers:

Parisian sonic mastermind Romain Turzi likes to keep things alphabetical. His first album was called A, and consisted entirely of songs whose titles began with that letter, and he has followed suit with the follow-up, B. But this time around, all the songs are also named after cities all over the world, from “Baltimore” to “Beijing,” making for a bit of an international travelogue. While Turzi ostensibly operates under the umbrella of electronic music, there’s as much rock to these tracks as there is electronica. As with its predecessor, B is heavily influenced by Krautrock and psychedelia, and the tracks are divided between synthesizer-based soundscapes — like the Tangerine Dream-esque “Bogota” and the Kraftwerkian “Buenos Aires” — and the snarling, fuzz-toned guitar growls of tracks like the Eastern-tinged “Bombay” and the intense, Pink Floyd-meets-Goblin “Bangkok.” A couple of well-known guests pop up along the course of Turzi’s journey, too. Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie lends his voice to the thumping electro-rock of “Baltimore,” whose combination of throbbing synths and psychedelic guitars recalls the sound of his own band circa Evil Heat. And legendary French avant-garde songstress Brigitte Fontaine makes a rare appearance on the nearly ten-minute epic “Bamako,” perhaps the spaciest, trippiest cut on the entire album, where ethereal, interstellar-sounding synthesizer sets a dreamy mood atop a gentle bed of percussion, with Fontaine’s heavily processed voice offering spoken lines in French above it all. As the closing track, it ends Turzi’s second album on a hypnotic, otherworldly note, seeming to leave the possibilities for the next release floating somewhere in the cosmos along with Fontaine’s voice. Well, at least we’ve got a pretty good idea what the next album will be called. ~ J. Allen, Rovi Performers: Paul Knight Malciak – Vocals (Background), Guitar; Areksi – Percussion; Bobby Gillespie – Vocals; Ulysse Klotz – Violin

Good Good Desperation

Good Good Desperation

$12.78

Hopewell’s albums haven’t always been consistent, but the band has always had honorable intentions and an attractive sound, one that owes a lot to the psychedelic rock and space rock of the 1960s and ’70s while remaining relevant to alternative pop/rock and indie rock. Sure, it would have been easy for Hopewell to simply emulate the past and be a likable exercise in nostalgia; instead, they demonstrate that a band indebted to Pink Floyd, the Velvet Underground, the Moody Blues ELO, and post-1965 Beatles can also be into Radiohead and Jane’s Addiction. And even when their recordings missed the mark, Hopewell was still a group that deserved respect. Good Good Desperation never misses the mark, though — in fact, this 2009 release is one of Hopewell’s more consistent albums, as all of the pieces fall into place nicely. There are no weak or unsuccessful tracks on this CD; whether they are being influenced by Jane’s Addiction (minus JA’s more metallic qualities) or Pink Floyd and the Beatles, Hopewell’s ideas always pay off this time. Good Good Desperation won’t necessarily win over myopic individuals who have no use for alternative rock and insist that nothing worthwhile was recorded after the ’80s, but then, people who fit that description aren’t Hopewell’s audience. Hopewell never pretended to be a Pink Floyd cover band; rather, they always turned to different rock areas for creative inspiration, and that approach yields consistently appealing results on Good Good Desperation. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Rishi Dhir – Sitar

After the surprisingly dark and subdued Born to Die, Grand Funk Railroad’s original lineup rallied to record one more album in 1976. Also onboard was an unlikely choice of producer, avant-garde rock king Frank Zappa. As odd as this marriage may seem, the end result is one of the best albums in the Grand Funk Railroad canon. Zappa’s production forsakes the high-gloss style that dominated the rest of their mid-’70s output, instead opting for a live-in-the-studio approach with minimal overdubs. This style works well, allowing the group to funnel the solid songcraft they had developed during their hitmaking years into a loose, energetic soundscape that harkens back to the finest moments of their early power-trio output. Indeed, songs like “Can You Do It” and “Out to Get You” (featuring a guest guitar solo from Zappa) crackle with the kind of hard rock energy that had been lost on All The Girls in the World Beware and Born to Die. However, the songs do not get buried under the power-trio theatrics: “Just Couldn’t Wait” is a dynamic fusion of pop hooks and rock firepower that highlights the group’s oft-underrated harmonies and “Release Your Love” injects catchy singalong choruses to a country-inflected slice of rock. Another highlight is “Miss My Baby,” an anguished, epic power ballad that shows off the group’s sound at its most subtle and atmospheric. To sum up, Good Singin’ Good Playin’ is an album that will please the group’s fans and may even win over other classic rock enthusiasts with its combination of well-crafted songs and gutsy, no-frills production. ~ Donald A. Guarisco, Rovi Performers: Craig Frost – Vocals (Background), Keyboards; Don Brewer – Vocals, Percussion, Drums; Frank Zappa – Vocals (Background), Guitar; Mark Farner – Harmonica, Piano, Vocals, Keyboards, Guitar; Mel Schacher – Vocals (Background), Bass

One of the ’70s’ and ’80s’ most successful songwriters, Garry Glenn didn’t find the transition to performing quite as smooth, although he did enjoy some hits. But neither his debut album nor his first release for Motown (this one) managed to reach the same heights as any of the songs he’d written for everyone from Anita Baker to Eddie Kendricks and Natalie Cole. A couple of songs did make the Top 40 on the R&B charts, but neither could go beyond that. ~ Ron Wynn, Rovi Performers: Garry Glenn – Vocals, Keyboards

The Good Will Out

The Good Will Out

$9.59

Debut albums rarely arrive with as much expectation as Embrace’s The Good Will Out — in Britain, at least. Arriving after the massive success of Oasis and the Verve, The Good Will Out was perceived as the heir apparent to the lad-rock throne. One listen to The Good Will Out illustrates why — the group ingeniously combines the anthemic hooks and monolithic roar of Oasis with the sweeping aural majesty of the Verve. That alone makes the album a bracing listen, but The Good Will Out doesn’t quite have enough substance to compete in the big leagues. Danny McNamara simply doesn’t have the charisma of Liam Gallagher or Richard Ashcroft, and his songs aren’t as immediate or memorable as Noel Gallagher’s or Ashcroft’s. That’s not to say they’re bad songs — on the contrary, they’re quite good, and they’re performed passionately. It’s just that in comparison to their peers — who really are their influences, as well — they lack that certain magic. Nevertheless, The Good Will Out illustrates enough promise and panache to make it a first-rate debut. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: Danny McNamara – Guitar, Vocals; Mike Heaton – Vocals (Background), Drums; Richard McNamara – Vocals (Background), Guitar; Steven Firth – Bass

While listening to the Marlboro Chorus’ debut album, Good Luck, earwitnesses will instantaneously gather that the indie rock collective is a combination of nearly every band they ever loved. If late-’80s/early-’90s college rock is dear to your heart or if the earnest rock & roll charm of everything that Elephant 6 ever released suits you nicely, chances are you’ll find Good Luck to be a rare treasure. Ex-Multiple Cat creator Pat Stolley, who goes by the moniker B. Patric in the album credits, recorded the album in the basement of his house in suburban Iowa with a few friends. Fellow Tripmaster Monkey drummer Marty “Rudie” Reyhons, drummer Justin Parris (aka the Emperor Justinian), and pianist Rick Stoneking each added their own special bits and left Stolley to tailor things. Good Luck is a remarkably clever pop album in the truest sense, and despite the reference to being a chorus, the Marlboro Chorus’ overall innocent sound is the one thing that’s perfectly in order. From the tumbling dynamics of “The Unrulable Child” and the wavering sentiment of “Mrs. Bury-the-Bone” to the countrified licks of “The Discoverers” and the carousel-esque “Always One for Fun,” Good Luck thrives on its lack of direction. The path in design changes from song to song, reflecting the fact that Stolley didn’t initially have a clear purpose in mind other than to experiment on his own and make a record. Thankfully a warm impression ensued and the specialness of indie rock is discovered and cherished once more. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, Rovi Performers: Justin Parris – Drums; Rick Stoneking – Piano

Holly Golightly’s solo debut is quite a departure from her usual gig as a member of the garage-rocking, Billy Childish-sponsored group Thee Headcoatees. But for a couple of tracks, Golightly and Thee Headcoatees drummer Bruce Brand create a low-key and introspective musical mood. The overall sound is still raw and live, but the tempos and performances are relaxed. Golightly’s voice is very intimate and conversational. She sounds especially good when she harmonizes with herself to create a girl group sound. The songs she wrote are filled with wit and verve and not a little anger. The title track is a classic “you hurt me, you suck” type of song; in fact, most of the songs here are. It is a real broken-hearted breakup record. And Golightly has the good sense to cover a Wreckless Eric song, “Comedy Time.” Good Things is a strong debut that definitely points the way to good things to come from Holly Golightly. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi Performers: Teddy Slazenger – Handclapping; Baine Watson – Vocals; Bruce Brand – Harp, Bass, Guitar, Drums, Percussion; Holly Golightly – Vocals, Piano, Bass, Guitar, Percussion; Woodie Taylor – Drums

The Good Mornings

The Good Mornings

$11.18

Folk and country-influenced dream pop not at all far removed from Lavender Diamond, The Good Mornings is a side project from singer Carmen Paradise and multi-instrumentalist Jason Lantrip, both from the Michigan space rock outfit Calliope. Not nearly as ’60s-influenced as one might expect from the gloriously hideous op-art sleeve, The Good Mornings is a fairly straightforward slab of bedroom indie pop featuring Paradise’s sweet-toned if a touch pitch-poor vocals over a combination of acoustic guitar, pedal steel and vintage electronics, with minimal percussion and not much bottom end, either. The outstanding opener “Reflections of the Sky,” a small dream pop epic that compares favorably to recent Flaming Lips, is as good as this album gets, with the remaining ten tracks offering appealing variations on that indie psych template. Folks entering with unnaturally high expectations (or those expecting this to sound at all like Calliope, which it really doesn’t) may be disappointed by the offhand, homemade nature of The Good Mornings, but it’s a small, charming slice of indie electronic atmosphere. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi Performers: Joe Bakaitis – Fender Rhodes, Bass (Upright), Guitar (Bass), Saxophone; Carmen Paradise – Guitar (Acoustic), Vocals; Danny Amori – Drums; Jason Lantrip – Drums, Vocals, Guitar (Electric)

Good News

Good News

$14.38

The Charlie Sizemore Band gather their instrumental and vocal prowess behind Sizemore’s country-styled vocals on Good News. The band plays contemporary bluegrass but, like many other current groups, continues to touch upon traditional themes. Two drinking songs, “Blame It on Vern” and “The Less I That I Drink,” are by turns sad and humorous. “I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Get Up” is a freewheeling celebration of the power of love and is followed, incongruously, by “I Won’t Be Far from Here,” a song about one of country music’s favorite standbys, a no-good woman. As has become standard in contemporary bluegrass, Sizemore includes at least two Civil War songs, “Whiskey Willie” and “The Silver Bugle.” The first is about a whiskey maker who — in the spirit of democracy — sells his brew to the North and South. “The Silver Bugle” is more plaintive, a story of how the war has continued to haunt Southern memory. One curiosity is “Alison’s Band,” from the point of view of a bluegrass picker (who seems to be Sizemore) who dreams of playing with Alison Krauss. The song name-checks everyone in the band, and it will probably give fans — of Sizemore and Krauss — a good belly laugh. With good songs and performances, the Charlie Sizemore Band have delivered a solid set. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., Rovi Performers: Danny Barnes – Claw Hammer Banjo, Vocal Harmony, Mandolin, Harmony Vocals, Banjo; Wayne Fields – Banjo; Charlie Sizemore – Vocal Harmony, Harmony Vocals, Vocals, Guitar; John Pennell – Bass; Matt DeSpain – Hawaiian Guitar, Vocal Harmony, Dobro, Harmony Vocals, Vocals

As Good as Dead

As Good as Dead

$7.98

Of the dozens of grunge (or “heavy alternative”) bands that emerged in the wake of Nirvana’s success, one of the few that managed anything close to Kurt Cobain’s emotional resonance was Local H. Just as much of Nirvana’s early material was informed by Cobain’s experiences growing up as a misfit in blue-collar Aberdeen, WA, Local H’s Scott Lucas spun a loose concept album out of life in Zion, IL, a dead-end town in the industrial Midwest, for the group’s second disc, As Good as Dead. Though Cobain’s artier ambitions added an oddball sonic undertow to his neo-Sabbath dropped chords, Lucas’ tastes obviously run to meat-and-potatoes hard rock, with just enough of a melody line to give you something to hum while you bang your head. But while Lucas has the guitar (and bass) style of a rock dude, like Cobain, he has the soul of a punk rocker, albeit one growing up in a nowhere town who isn’t sure how to get out. With 13 songs written in the voice of a guy who never got past the city limits, As Good as Dead is a litany of bitterness over a life that’s being wasted before your very eyes, from the dumb-ass machismo of “High-Fiving MF” and the delusional nostalgia of “Back in the Day” to the self-destructive dysfunctional relationship of “No Problem” and the alcoholic self-loathing of “Fritz’s Corner.” Even the album’s funny moments speak of disappointment and dashed hopes — in “Lovey Dovey,” Lucas sounds happiest when his best friend is fighting with his girlfriend, and while the line “If I was Eddie Vedder/Would you like me any better?” cuts several ways at once, there’s something in the delivery that suggests Lucas knows the answer…and doesn’t want to hear it. Musically, As Good as Dead sounds just as brutal as its lyrics; while there’s a graceful minor-key lyricism to quieter number like “No Problem” and “Eddie Vedder,” Lucas and drummer Joe Daniels bash with an unsettling intensity on “Nothing Special” and “I Saw What You Did and I Know Who You Are.” While the two sludgy slow numbers that close the album bring As Good as Dead to a disappointing conclusion, maybe it’s appropriate — you can’t end an album about failure on a note of triumph, and anyone who grew up in a one-paper town will doubtless wince with recognition at the bitter hopelessness of As Good as Dead. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Performers: Joe Daniels – Drums; Scott Lucas – Guitar

A Good Life

A Good Life

$12.78

Joe Grushecky writes like a regular guy for a good reason — he is one. While Grushecky has had a long career in rock & roll, including a brief flirtation with the major labels as frontman for the Iron City Houserockers, these days he earns his living as a schoolteacher and makes music on the side, which is doubtless why when he writes about the lives of working stiffs and ordinary Joes, the songs bear the ring of truth rather than a sense of condescension. A Good Life is Grushecky’s tenth album since the breakup of the Houserockers, and it doesn’t break much in the way of new ground, but that isn’t a bad thing — this is solid and heartfelt rust belt rock & roll played and sung by a man who has been doing this stuff and making it stick for quite some time, and he still hasn’t lost his passion for what he does. Grushecky also hasn’t lost his knack as a songwriter — in fact, A Good Life is one of his strongest collections of new songs in years. Grushecky’s tales of ordinary folks counting life’s small blessings are smart and moving (“A Good Life,” “Party Tonight”), he knows plenty about the uphill climb of life (“Code of Silence,” “Searching for My Soul”), and his tale of a busted marriage (“The Other Shoe”) sounds as honest as his story of a family that somehow held together (“Father and Son”). And while no one would ever peg Grushecky as a proud son of Louisiana, “Lake Pontchartrain” is a cry of pain and rage in the wake of Hurricane Katrina that sounds like he witnessed the tragedy up close and personal. Grushecky’s work is good enough on A Good Life that the presence of friend, fan, and genuine rock star Bruce Springsteen on four songs doesn’t steal the show away from him; A Good Life is another chapter in the ongoing story of an underrated rock & roll hero who may never become a household name but who keeps on doing his work as well as he can, and there’s a message in that almost as important as any in the songs he writes. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Performers: Marc Reisman – Harmonica; Rick Witkowski – Dobro, Percussion, Keyboards, Guitar, Vocals, Guitar (Electric); Art Nardini – Bass; Bill Toms – Guitar, Vocals; Bruce Springsteen – Guitar, Vocals; Jeff Garrison – Guitar, Vocals, Drums, Bass, Guitar (Bass); Joe Grushecky – Harmonica, Mandolin, Vocals, Guitar; Joffo Simmons – Drums;

Good Things

Good Things

$15.98

Given the complexities of corporate politics, soul belter Chuck Jackson probably recorded for too many different labels to ever receive a truly definitive career-spanning overview, but for sheer quality and quantity the Kent retrospective Good Things is the disc to beat, assembling two dozen chart hits, cult classics, and unreleased sides from the singer’s glory years with the New York indie Wand. After Dionne Warwick, Jackson was arguably the premier interpreter of the indelible pop songs of composer Burt Bacharach, and Good Things spotlights their collaboration with dramatic, heart-wrenching performances including “I Wake Up Crying,” “Any Day Now,” and “I Just Don’t Know What to Do with Myself.” No less impressive are singles including “Tell Him I’m Not Home” and “I Keep Forgetting,” which likewise showcase the grandiose drama of Jackson’s gritty style. But Good Things is most notable for the inclusion of lesser-known efforts like the upbeat “Hand It Over” and the previously unissued “What’s with This Loneliness,” a major favorite on Britain’s Northern soul circuit decades after the fact — although Chuck Jackson has often been marginalized as merely a balladeer, these songs capture a kinetic energy that’s no less persuasive, proving Jackson a far greater talent than most soul aficionados give him credit for. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi Performers: Chuck Jackson – Vocals

Good as Gold

Good as Gold

$9.58

Good As Gold was a giant leap forward for New Orleans’ Red Rockers after Condition Red. No longer satisfied with being merely Clash imitators, they moved towards a more accessible sound while maintaining their punk edginess. Good As Gold is quick and tight power pop, fast paced (most songs clock in under four minutes), lean, and consistent from start to finish. The opening blast “China,” with its bouncy rhythm and catchy chorus, deservedly became a modest hit. The title cut follows in that vein, a cautionary tale on the trappings of materialism. The highly danceable “’til It All Falls Down” could have been a club hit, but during the synth-pop era probably it never had a chance. Red Rockers voice their political concerns on “Change the World Around” and “Home is Where the War Is,” the latter tune a ringer for early U2. Good Trouble

Good Trouble

$5.58

Good Trouble disappointed the bean counters and the snob critics who always hated this Champaign quintet anyway. Sure it’s no Hi Infidelity, but Good Trouble shoots out some golden shards. Where Hi Infidelity perfectly balanced the muscle of REO’s ’70s stuff with wads of bankable bubblegum, here, lead single “Keep the Fire Burning” signals a decent into generic; but much of Good Trouble plays out a rocking and rollicking good time, fighting off mediocrity. First off, bassist Bruce Hall comes to the fore twice (usually once) and delivers two knockouts: “Girl With the Heart of Gold” and “Let’s Be-Bop.” As always, Neal Doughty’s keys spruce up the works; “I’ll Follow You” features his sublime touch as well as sizzling Richrath axe-kicking behind a dusty, lusty Texas café tale. Coup de grâce “The Key” unlocks a commercial paradox: a transcendent tapestry housed in a homogenized humdinger, as Kev Cronin bellows questions about what he knows and sees, yearning for the answer locked within himself. But only he can set it free; only he has the key. Brilliant. ~ Doug Stone, Rovi Performers: Scott Forman – Crotale, Chimes, Shaker; Steve Forman – Crotale, Shaker, Chimes, Percussion; Alan Gratzer – Tambourine, Drums; Bruce Hall – Guitar (Bass), Bass, Vocals; Gary Richrath – Vocals, Guitar (Electric), Guitar; Kevin Cronin – Vocal Harmony, Guitar (Rhythm), Harmony Vocals, Vocals (Background), Piano, Vocals, Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar; N. Good Mourning

Good Mourning

$11.18

Good Mourning is the handsome if dark-eyed offspring of the deliberately melodic From Here to Infirmary LP and Alkaline Trio’s more raucous earlier work. Whether or not the band “sold out” (or whatever) when Infirmary arrived with the stamp of ambitious indie Vagrant, the set nevertheless seemed forced. For Good Mourning, Derek Grant replaces Mike Felumlee behind the kit, joining the grating-like-gouda voices and ringing guitars of Matt Skiba and Dan Andriano on the AT’s second Vagrant outing. It’s an album that kills with catchiness. Though “This Could Be Love” details the steps a jilted lover would take to off him, Skiba’s melodic sensibility is hard not to hum along to. Similarly, the triumphant final key change of “Continental” makes its bitter farewell to a suicide victim easier to swallow. This dichotomy between deathly fascination and darn-right pop sensibility continues throughout Good Mourning. Despite making one take a few extra looks at the black and red lyric booklet, it also points to the Trio’s newfound confidence to weave its tortured pathos untreated into punk-pop hair shirts for teenagers everywhere. The laughs continue with “Emma” and “Fatally Yours,” which features the classic couplet “You crashed your car through the front door/I pulled you from the wreckage/You told me that you missed me/But you meant with the grill and hood.” Unlike their doe-eyed emo-punk peers, the Alkaline Trio’s take on true love is closer to love-hate. “Donner Party (All Night)” is a snow angel in a blizzard of punk-fueled melody, where the dried blood looks black on the nighttime snowpack. Finally, a glimmer of hope shines from a crack in the mortuary curtains. Good Mourning closes with the plaintive acoustic number “Blue in the Face.” The song’s last line is a grudging request, but one that admits the faults of both parties, and accepts them as a better reality than the death wishes, dour proclamations, and damning dreams of sunlight that dominate the majority of the record. But even as the coffin closes, anthemic melody reflects in the blood pooled on the floor. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi Performers: Daniel Andriano – Bass, Vocals; Derek Grant – Drums; Matt Skiba – Vocals, Guitar

In Good Company

In Good Company

$15.18

Mandolinist Jimmy Gaudreau cut his bluegrass teeth in a number of seminal progressive bands in the late ’60s and ’70s before working with Chesapeake and Robin and Linda Williams. In Good Company, then, isn’t a new album, but a collection of material recorded with various bands and players between 1989 and 2005. The instrumentals and songs range quite a bit stylistically, from mellow folk to fairly traditional bluegrass to something one might call progressive acoustic. There’s a really nice take on the Beatles’ “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away” with guitarist-mandolinist Emory Lester, banjoist Scott Walker, and Gaudreau and Mary Paula Wilson handling the fine harmony. There’s a solid, live take on “Ain’t Nobody Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone” from 1992 with Tony Rice singing lead, and a country-tinged “Are You Wasting My Time?” with Eric Brace on vocals and Mike Auldridge’s pedal steel work. Other highlights include a live, spunky take on Arthur Smith’s “Crazy Blues” with some hot picking by guitarist Jack Lawrence, an upbeat take on “Follow the Leader,” and another Rice vocal on “Another Lonesome Morning” from 1992. In Good Company is filled with good acoustic music, and promises something for bluegrass fans of almost any stripe. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., Rovi Performers: Dave Giegerich – Hawaiian Guitar; Aubrey Haynie – Fiddle; Béla Fleck – Banjo; Bill Clifton – Guitar (Rhythm), Vocals; Bill Emerson – Banjo; Dan Tyminski – Tenor (Vocal); Eddie Adcock – Vocal Harmony, Harmony Vocals; Jimmy Gaudreau – Mandola, Mandolin, Baritone (Vocal), Tenor (Vocal), Vocals, Guitar; Joel Fox – Bariton

Feelin’ Good was the first album Jessie Mae Hemphill released in the United States and it differs from its predecessor She-Wolf in that it captures her at her rawest. Half of the record features her supported only by a rhythm guitar and drums, while the other half has Hemphill wailing away at her guitar and percussion simultaneously. The result is hypnotic, mesmerizing record that successfully updates Delta blues, making the covers sound as fresh as the originals. ~ Thom Owens, Rovi Performers: Jessie Mae Hemphill – Tambourine, Drums (Bass), Drums (Snare), Bells, Vocals, Guitar; Dr. David Evans – Guitar; R.L. Good Time

Good Time

$9.57

Alan Jackson has never been away, so why does 2008′s Good Time feel like a comeback album? Because this, his 14th album, is a return to straight-ahead modern country after several years of detours, including a late-night saloon album produced by Alison Krauss (Like Red on a Rose) and an austere collection of spirituals (Precious Memories). Even his last full-fledged country album, 2004′s What I Do, felt a little understated and modest, adjectives that can’t quite be applied to Good Time, even if it bears Jackson’s unmistakable mark of casual authority. That casualness can disguise his ambitions, especially on an album as shining and snappy as this. It’s only upon close inspection that the audacity behind Good Time becomes apparent: it’s Jackson’s first album of all-original material, and at 17 tracks it’s the effective equivalent of a double-album in country music, where all albums outside of Vince Gill’s mammoth triple-disc These Days are brief and to the point. Unsurprisingly given its length, Good Time drifts amiably and takes its time, lingering on its ballads and gliding through the faster tunes, sustaining a cheerful mood. It’s so easy to enjoy that it takes a bit of attention to dig out the true gems lying here, and there are many: the brisk bluegrass strut of “Long Long Way,” brought down to earth by Jackson’s Haggard-esque phrasing; the slightly gangly, tongue-in-cheek Western swing of “I Still Like Bologna,” which finds a more straightforward cousin in “Nothing Left to Do”; the gentle roll of “Listen to Your Senses,” as sweet and light a song as Jackson has ever cut. These are the exceptions on an album that feels big and bright, a throwback to the days of ’80s new country, especially on “Never Loved Before,” a zippy duet with Martina McBride that finds its flip on “Laid Back ‘n Low Key,” a piece of soft rock that could have fit onto the airwaves during the prime of urban cowboy. And that is the sly genius of Good Time — it demonstrates that Jackson is as comfortable with the poppier side of country as he is with the harder stuff, and he can deliver it without seeming as if he’s pandering, a feat that is almost as impressive as those generic detours he’s taken in the past few years. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: Greenwood Hart – Vocoder; Robbie Flint – Lap Steel Guitar; Shane Keister – Vocoder; Angela Bennett Shelton – Vocals (Background); Bruce Watkins – Banjo, Guitar (Acoustic); Emily Harris – Vocals (Background);

The Good Night

The Good Night

$13.58

The Good Night is a wonderfully ironic title for Victory at Sea’s third and strongest record; though their slow, simmering sound revels in nocturnal languor, the pervasive aura is anything but restful, evoking the stark mysteries and creeping dread of the darkness with unnerving precision. Comparisons to PJ Harvey’s early Dry-era work seem inevitable, but the brute emotional force of Mona Elliott’s haunted vocals and grim lyrics is tempered by moments of unexpected simplicity and beauty that set The Good Night apart. Its structure is likewise unique: Opening with the smoldering “Mary in June,” the record seems to crumble in a kind of psychic free fall, with the songs growing progressively starker and more affecting as they count down. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi Performers: Mel Lederman – Bass (Electric), Fender Rhodes, Piano, Guitar (Bass); Carl Eklof – Drums; Heidi Saperstein – Vocals; Jeff Goddard – Trumpet; Mona Elliott – Vocals, Guitar; Seana Carmody – Vocals; Taro Hatanaka – Violin; Thalia Zedek – Vocals

Good Love! is an excellent latter-day record from Johnnie Taylor, illustrating that the singer has lost very little of his soulful power. Although the production may be a little to slick for some tastes, Taylor’s gutsy singing makes the music sound gritty, and very few modern-day Southern soul albums have a collection of songs this consistently strong. In other words, Good Love! is everything any Johnnie Taylor fan could hope for from a modern-day soul record. ~ Leo Stanley, Rovi Performers: Charles Rose – Horn; Dennis Soule – Horn; Gary Armstrong – Horn; Harvey Thompson – Horn; Jewel Bass – Vocals (Background); Jim Horn – Horn; Quanda Brooks – Vocals (Background); Thomisene Anderson – Vocals (Background); Vinnie Ciesielski – Horn;

And the Feeling's Good

And the Feeling’s Good

$9.58

In the 1970s, versatility was one of Jose Feliciano’s strong points — the Puerto Rican singer was a master of soul, although he also had strong soft rock and Latin pop credentials. Feliciano’s diversity is an asset on And the Feeling’s Good, which tends to favor soul but isn’t without pop and rock. Released in 1974, this generally decent and occasionally excellent LP is best known for the charming “Stay With Me” and the two themes from the NBC sitcom Chico and the Man: the congenial opening theme and grittier closing number “Hard Times in El Barrio.” The album’s other selections range from Feliciano’s tender “Essence of Your Love” to enjoyable performances of “You’re No Good” (which was a major hit for Linda Ronstadt in 1974 and was covered by Van Halen in 1979) and Stevie Wonder’s “Golden Lady.” He makes an unexpected detour into hard rock on the instrumental “Virgo,” which has a strong Jimi Hendrix influence and is atypical of the LP on the whole. And the Feeling’s Good isn’t the best album that Feliciano provided in the 1970s, but it’s a respectable release that is worth hunting for. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Paulinho Magalhaes – Quica, Agogo, Tambourine, Percussion, Drums; Carolyn Ford – Voices; Cathy Ford – Voices; Janna Merlyn Feliciano – Handclapping, Voices; Mehran – Handclapping; Sid Sharp – Strings; The Magic Strings – Strings; David Kemper – Shaker, Drums; Dick Henderson – Bass;

The Good Thief

The Good Thief

$10.38

On singer/songwriter John Brannen’s fourth album, he combines rootsy arrangements with a handful of solid songs to create a wise record that doesn’t forget to rock. His sound and approach, as some critics have noted, shows the influence of Bruce Springsteen and John Cougar Mellencamp without being derivative. Call it rock from America’s heartland. “A Pair of Dice” tells the tale of a lucky gambler whose luck runs out when the devil comes to him “disguised, painted lips and pleading eyes.” While this might look like another song about another woman doing a man wrong, the lyric never spells everything out and Brannen delivers the piece with gusto. “Lookin’ Good” rolls along with a nice rhythmic base, guitars and bass chugging along as the protagonist pines over his good-looking Ex. Brannen’s joined by a talented band including guitarist Pete Carr, pianist Clayton Ivy, bassist Willie Weeks, and drummer Owen Hale, allowing for full-bodied arrangements. There’s also liberal use of background singers, as on “Lost Angels,” giving the choruses a little something extra. The Good Thief will appeal to fans of the above-mentioned singers, and will be a much welcomed return to form for fans who recall Brannen’s debut, Mystery Street. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., Rovi Performers: John Brannen – Guitar (12 String Acoustic), Harmonica, Guitar (Steel), Vocals, Guitar (Acoustic); Clayton Ivey – Hammond B3, Organ (Hammond), Piano (Electric), Piano (Grand); Melissa Mattey – Cello; Robert Bailey – Vocals (Background); Vicki Hampton – Vocals (Background); Giles Reeves – Whistle, Harmonium, Pipe, Tin Whistle, Strings, Drums; Owen Hale – Drums; Paul Simmons – Percussion, Drums;

As Good as Gone

As Good as Gone

$12.78

Since Nudge recorded 2005′s Cached, the other projects of the band’s members have gone on to quite a bit of success: Honey Owens makes gracefully, sensually trippy music as Valet; Paul Dickow’s Strategy bridges the gaps between dub, post-rock, and emotive electronics; and Brian Foote has been one of Kranky’s resident producers, working with acts like Lotus Plaza and Lotus Plaza as well as Valet and Strategy. It seems that time off from Nudge did the band good, because As Good as Gone is some of the trio’s finest, most confident work. It’s also the band’s most focused release, even as it incorporates the attention to textural detail of Elaborate Devices for Filtering Crisis and Cached’s futuristic dub excursions with elements of Foote, Dickow, and Owens’ other projects. While these tracks may not be showy, they are impressive, particularly “Aurolac,” an intricate fusion of delicately winding guitars, dubby bass, and a beat that gradually grows more complex and abstract as the song progresses, evolving from electronic percussion to brushed drums. “Harmo” is the musical equivalent of a cloud: soft, airy, and surprisingly massive with layers of thumb piano, breath-like harmonica drones, and Owens’ vocals drifting over each other for nearly five minutes. As Good as Gone is also some of Nudge’s most expansive work, making it all the easier to get lost in the minute sounds and shifts that pop up in songs like the hypnotic standout “Tito.” On this song and “Two Hands,” Owens’ voice is the guidepost for listeners, adding a more accessible feel even if the songs aren’t quite pop. When Foote takes over the vocal duties, his voice is treated as another texture, giving songs like “Burns Blue” (which also features longtime Nudge contributor Mat Morgan on percussion) and the evocative album closer, “Dawn Comes Light,” a quasi-instrumental feel. Deeply atmospheric even for a Kranky release, As Good as Gone’s subtlety is its strength, and shows how Foote, Dickow, Owens, and company bring out the best in each other. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi Performers: Brian Foote – Harmonica, Guitar, Bass, Synthesizer, Vocals, Trumpet, Percussion; Honey Owens – Vocals, Percussion, Guitar, Bass; Jon Pyle – Guitar, Percussion; Marc Hellner – Guitar; Mat Morgan – Percussion; Matt Morgan – Percussion; Paul Dickow – Percussion, Guitar, Bass, Synthesizer

Good to Be Back

Good to Be Back

$5.07

When Natalie Cole released 1989′s Good to Be Back, the follow-up to 1987′s Everlasting, her fans had become accustomed to her year-long recording gaps for six years, going back to 1983′s I’m Ready. So it’s not as if her absence was that much of a surprise, but given the ups and downs of her personal life, the album’s title could be alluding to something entirely different. (1989 was the year she married drummer, producer and Rufus founder Andre Fischer). At any rate, Good to Be Back continued her popularity in the mainstream and on the adult contemporary chart. The success of four singles — “As a Matter of Fact,” and especially the ballads “Miss You Like Crazy,” “Starting Over Again,” and “I Do” (a duet with Freddie Jackson) — belied the album’s inability to crack the Top 50 of the album chart. The ballads were (and have continued to be) staples on adult contemporary stations. On the other hand, the disposability of “Safe” and “Somebody’s Rocking My Dreamboat” made it all the more evident that Cole was outgrowing the lighter and more upbeat material. A deep album cut, “The Rest of the Night” (co-written by Glen Ballard) is a major reason to not settle for an anthology. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi Performers: André Fischer – Brushes; Eddie Cole & His Gang – Finger Snapping, Finger Snaps, Vocals (Background); Ren Klyce – Fairlight, Emulator; Billy T. 2009 album from the acclaimed guitarist. While his more recent recordings have primarily consisted of cover material, a collection of original songs had been simmering and taking shape for several years. It all comes to the surface on Good Day. While it’s White’s vision that ultimately drives Good Day, he does get some assistance and inspiration from DC, the versatile keyboardist/programmer/songwriter who has produced and/or collaborated with a variety of contemporary Jazz artists in recent years. Also helping out was keyboardist/producer Philippe Saisse, an accomplished solo artist in his own right who has helped to re-shape the careers of Rick Braun, Marc Antoine and Gato Barbieri, among many others. Good Morning!

Good Morning!

$15.98

Daevid Allen’s flights of fancy and cheerful hippie proselytizing have given birth to projects as diverse as the progressive rock of Gong as well as naturalistic solo works such as Good Morning. This record was recorded in 1976, six years after Allen’s last solo outing, Banana Moon. It differs markedly from that record, as well as his group work with Gong. Good Morning is more acoustic, with no drums, and was recorded on a four-track tape machine at Allen’s Majorcan home, “Bananamoon Observatory.” As with Gong, Allen plays his cosmic-effected “glissando” guitar, and he calls on girlfriend Gilli Smyth for her signature “space whisper.” Additionally, he employs an unknown Spanish group called Euterpe. The songs here merge together well and have a childlike wonder, punctuated by Allen’s singsong delivery and some peaceful synth. Side one is the quiet, poetic side, whereas side two comes closest to Gong, with the moody 11-minute “Wise Man in Your Heart.” Where previously Allen leaned on the compositional skills of Smyth, Christian Tritsch, and others, all of the songs on this record were written by Allen. The word that best describes his songwriting would be relaxed. Allen doesn’t strive for profundity, and in so doing creates a work filled with humility and charm. ~ Peter Kurtz, Rovi Performers: Pepe Milan – Mandolin, Percussion, Guitar; Tony Ares – Contrabass, Bass; Ann Camps – Vocals; Daevid Allen – Vocals, Guitar; Gilli Smyth – Vocals; Mike Howlett – Bass; Pierre Moerlen – Percussion; Toni Tree Fernandez – Guitar; Tony Paschal – Keyboards, Guitar

Good Monsters

Good Monsters

$8.78

The evolution to a pure rock sound on Jars of Clay’s seventh studio album, Good Monsters, is not a far cry from traces of alternative rock that surface on nearly all of their recordings in one degree or another. Fans accurately predicted a return to a harder-edged rock outing after the band’s three previous efforts — 2003′s Furthermore and Who We Are Instead, as well as 2005′s Redemption Songs — leaned primarily toward a stripped-down folk sound. Monsters stretches the four-piece band past any set of expectations and results in its boldest effort to date. Known for introspection and openness, their lyrics this time around offer no singular message other than an unapologetic admittance that they don’t have all the answers. Songs bounce from haunting to lilting, pensive to provoking, ultimately creating a set list that is cohesive only in its self-examination. Among the many standouts, the jarring opener, “Work,” manifests within seconds that acoustic guitars have been set aside in lieu of a more raw, glaring sound. “Dead Man (Carry Me)” gets going with a jangly guitar riff and heavy beats resembling secular contemporaries the Killers. “There Is a River” finds its place among the band’s greatest, taking an Americana drive à la Counting Crows’ “Mrs. Potter’s Lullaby” or Ingram Hill’s “The Captain.” “Mirrors & Smoke” features a duet between lead vocalist Dan Haseltine and ex-Sixpence None the Richer frontwoman Leigh Nash. The bandmembers continue to bear sonic ode to Toad the Wet Sprocket and U2 on this record, but they draw upon enough of their own trademark sound that only isolated moments would evoke comparisons to the latter’s mid-decade classic How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. Good Monsters doesn’t aim for arena rock, but it remains well-crafted and vulnerable at the core. Jars of Clay bear the cross of being compared to their self-titled debut with every following record. Good Monsters is a departure from that debut, but assuredly a welcome one that yet again demonstrates the band’s depth and talent. ~ Jared Johnson, Rovi Performers: Jennifer Kummer – French Horn; John Catchings – Cello; Kris Wilkinson – Viola; Aaron Sands – Bass; Ashley Cleveland – Vocals; Jeremy Lutito – Drums; Kate York – Vocals; Kim Fleming – Vocals; Leigh Nash – Vocal

Good Arrows

Good Arrows

$12.78

For their third full-length, Good Arrows, British six-piece Tunng continue to deliver the same combination of folk, pop, and indie electronica that earned the band the description of “folktronica.” Lightly programmed beats and blips pepper the acoustic guitar arpeggios that give the songs their base, as Sam Genders’ soft vocals layer over themselves and those of the backup singers and the myriad other instruments that twist and squirm their way into the compositions. Kalimba, hammer dulcimer, clarinet, eclectic samples, and electric guitar all manage to find their way in, but they’re arranged in such a way — gently, sparsely, deliberately — that nothing ever seems cluttered or ornate. This is helped in part due to the attention paid to structure here, because even with the noises and distractions and long stretches of space, there’s a cleanliness to the songs, verses and choruses and even the occasional hook all playing an important part in the album’s overall effectiveness. The fantastic “Bullets” almost seems like it could be by the (later) Beatles, with the line “We’re catching bullets in our teeth/It’s hard to do but they’re so sweet” pushing itself into the foreground as the one-two piano rhythm beats out playfully behind. Not every track on Good Arrows is as immediate as this, but all have a contagious, subtle beauty that makes them impossible to ignore, even as Genders sings explicitly about body parts, focusing on the visceral perhaps as an attempt to accommodate for what he cannot understand. “He crawls into her aorta…/He crawls like a rat inside her spine” he sings in “Hands,” only later to bluntly state “One day we will be dead,” almost as if he was trying to avert the unavoidable by exploring and rebuilding the body himself, or in “String,” where he and vocalist Becky Jacobs sing of being lost in themselves, “Hang my eyes up on a hook…/Inside my own skin I fail to find myself again,” as wind instruments and minor keys swirl around darkly behind. But even with all this, the obsession with the corporeal, with death, the album ends on a lighter note, as if Tunng realize that life isn’t all bad, isn’t simply the path to the inevitable finish. “It’s fine if we are by our side,” Genders sings, which, despite the triteness of the statement, provides a nice ending to the record, lighter and breezier, balancing the concern with enjoyment, and making Good Arrows a very complete album indeed. ~ Marisa Brown, Rovi Performers: Ashley Bates – Spanish Guitar, Vocals; Dave Lewis Lloyd – Cello; Phillip Winter [1] – Noise, Sampling, Bass (Electric), Synthesizer; Becky Jacobs – Vocals;

Good to Be Alive

Good to Be Alive

By the end of the ’90s, the power pop genre had become so classicist and insular as to be uncommercial, with the notable exception of a group of punky, geek rock outfits. Evelyn Forever’s sound falls squarely into this group; while they’re notably indie, their sound would play particularly well on mainstream modern rock radio. The inevitable comparison would be to say they’re kind of the Weezer of the Jersey shore, but there are notable differences. For one, Evelyn Forever’s hooks and background vocals are pushed way into the foreground, creating a sugary-sweet (and significantly more crisp) sound fitting for a pop record. The band also doesn’t shy away from being emotional and almost cheesy at times. These are important distinctions, as they mark Good to Be Alive as very much a power pop record. A true guitar pop fan will recognize the hooks, perfectly fuzzy guitars, and gooey background vocals, and they won’t be put off by the fact that a song like “Indecision” almost sounds like it could be by a boy band. Many of these attributes (and the fact that the band’s outlook couldn’t be much sunnier) are also probably why they haven’t moved beyond cult success, but the rabid pop fans wouldn’t want it any other way. ~ Jason Damas, Rovi Performers: Ed Yoo – Bass, Vocals; Mat Lewis – Vocals, Drums; Randy Staley – Keyboards; Robert Green – Keyboards

Pretty Girls Make Graves establish themselves as a revolutionary force right from the first note of the first song on Good Health, “Speakers Push the Air.” This Pacific Northwest band who includes members of the Murder City Devils and the Beehive doesn’t settle for pop-punk mediocrity; instead, lush melodies spiral into punk noise and vocalist Andrea Zollo moves from sweetness to destruction. Along the way, whether tearing everything apart in “If You Hate Your Friends, You’re Not Alone” or launching an anthem with “Sad Girls por Vida,” Zollo establishes herself as one of the heirs to the candy-coated teen angst of Poly Styrene. Meanwhile, the band evokes everything from Bikini Kill to Sleater-Kinney to Modest Mouse (check “The Get a Way”) to Gang of Four (“Ghosts in the Radio”). There’s even a little At the Drive-In on songs like “More Sweet Soul,” and it wouldn’t be surprising if Pretty Girls Make Graves found similar, not to mention worthy, acclaim. ~ Charles Spano, Rovi Performers: Andrea Zollo – Vocals; Derek Fudesco – Bass, Vocals; Jason Clark – Vocals, Guitar; Jay Clark – Vocals, Keyboards, Guitar; Nick deWitt – Sampling, Keyboards, Drums, Vocals

After nearly a decade of relative stability, the turnover in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers greatly increased during the veteran drummer’s last four years. This was not due to dissatisfaction with his dedication to hard bop and hard-swinging but to Blakey’s desire to play with as many of the promising young jazzmen as possible. The CD Feeling Good, The Jazz Messengers’ only recording from 1986-87, features a septet with trumpeter Wallace Roney, altoist Kenny Garrett and holdovers Jean Toussaint (on tenor), trombonist Tim Williams and pianist Donald Brown. The repertoire includes both new originals and a few Messenger standbys; the music is consistently enjoyable. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi Performers: Art Blakey – Drums; Donald Brown – Piano; Jean Toussaint – Sax (Tenor); Kenny Garrett – Sax (Alto); Peter Washington – Bass; Tim “T-Bone” Williams – Trombone; Wallace Roney – Trumpet

The highlights on It’s the Good Crazy, the second album from pop/rock tunesmith Matt White, are the ballads, which are intricately arranged by a number of producers who moonlight as solo songwriters. The guys keep things warm and tuneful throughout, recording everything onto analog tape and boosting White’s piano-and-vocals approach with strings, background vocals, and other radio-ready accessories. “Taking on Water” finds him duetting with up-and-coming songbird Emma Lasry while acoustic guitars strum quietly beneath them, and “When I Fall” gives him a chance to show off his falsetto, with a chorus that hints at Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work.” ~ Andrew Leahey, Rovi Performers: Emma Lasry – Vocals (Background); Jay Shulman – Cello; Steven Fiore – Vocals (Background); Billy Mohler – Bass; Charlie Morgan – Drums; Danny Blume – Guitar; David Baron – Tuba, Bass, Synthesizer, Piano; Jonathan Talbott – Violin; Josh Kaler – Pedal Steel, Percussion, Drums, Keyboards, Guitar (Acoustic);

Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Tammy Haider and Eliza Hiscox make the music of Royal Chord. Starting out in 2001 playing dusty Alt-Country with a crew that at one point swelled up to eight members, Tammy and Eliza now play primarily as a duo, replacing guitars with keyboards and band members with chopped drum breaks and sequenced bass lines. Their 2009 album, The Good Fight, sees them combine electronics with their neurotic and melancholic sensibility, delivering songs that range from summer Pop to funereal Folk. Performers: Andrew Spencer Goldman – Autoharp, Shaker, Tambourine, Vocals, Keyboards, Guitar; Eliza Hiscox – Whistle, Omnichord, Ukulele, Glockenspiel, Farfisa Organ, Drum Machine, Sampling, Slide Guitar, Guitar, Percussion, Vocals, Keyboards, Piano; Tammy Haider – Omnichord, Autoharp, Guitar, Vocals; Andrew Bencina – Wurlitzer, Strings, Bass; Andrew Papadopoulos – Bass; Dave Lang – Drums; Leon Stackpole – Guitar (Electric)

Ray Mantilla may be best known as a Latin jazz percussionist, but that oversimplifies his credentials. He is equally at home interpreting gems from the fields of bop and swing and recasting them into his element, while retaining the chemistry of the originals. He’s joined by baritone saxophonist Enrigue Fernández (a powerful player who is sort of a Latin version of the late Pepper Adams), pianist Edy Martinez, vibraphonist Mike Freeman, bassist Cucho Martínez, and drummer Bill Elder, with guest percussionist Steve Berrios added on some tracks. The first two songs come from the vast repertoire of the late vibraphonist Lionel Hampton, who would have likely approved of Mantilla’s reworkings of “Flying Home” and “The Midnight Sun.” From bop the leader draws his sights on Terry Gibbs’ “For Keeps” and a pair of Milt Jackson compositions, the gospel-flavored “Blues for Queen D” and a percolating interpretation of “Namesake” that showcases Freeman and the percussionists to good effect, scoring a bull’s-eye with each performance. Mantilla is also a gifted composer, offering the easygoing, upbeat “Camino al Cielo Too,” with Fernández switching to flute, along with the explosive finale, “Bari con Bata.” All around, this is a very rewarding session. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi Performers: Mike Freeman – Vibraphone; Bill Elder – Drums; Edy Martinez – Piano; Ray Mantilla – Percussion; Steve Berrios – Percussion
